Silicone Spatula Spoon - Tips and Resources

A silicone spatula spoon is made from bonded silcon, which is found in sand and rock, and mixed with oxygen to make a material that is very heat resistant and has a high melting point.

Silicone is dishwasher safe and does not rust, discolor, warp, or melt. A silicone spatula spoon is great for removing foods directly from pans or stirring very hot foods. A great silicone spatula will last for years without losing their strength or shape.

You should always check the heat ratings on the packaging in order to assure you are getting what you need. Heat ratings can range from 600 degrees to 900 degrees in a quality made silicone spatula spoon.

They also will not damage your pans like most other spatulas do. Many a Teflon-coated pan has been ruined due to scratching a metal spatula against the bottom or a plastic one melting.

No need to worry about the handles, many handles are made from a special plastic that is also heat resistant. While not as heat resistant as the silicone head, they are usually more so than plastic or metal handles. Some spatula spoons are made with plastic or metal handles that you can detach for cleaning, but one should not leave them laying around heat too long or you could end up with a melted handle or burned fingers.

A great feature is that they do not absorb colors and flavorings from your food. Since silicone is an inert material it is resistant to such absorptions. Since it does not absorb flavorings, you do not have to worry about it transferring flavors from one food into another during cooking or later after you think you have washed it.

To be sure you are getting pure silicone without fillers, you should find a flat surface and try pinching or twisting it. If you see white showing through, this means it has fillers and may not have a uniformity of heat resistance, leaving it to melt against your pans when you think you are safe. The spatula spoons with fillers are also more likely to absorb flavorings and transfer them into other foods.

Be sure your silicone spatula spoon has a nice head for dipping things out. Check to see that the handle is long and keeps your hands as far out of the way of possible of foods that spatter while you cook or the heat that rises out of cooking food. You want a nice rigid handle that can handle heavy foods. A handle that is too floppy only makes it harder to stir and can leave you dropping food instead of moving it.

Check the design as well. Some manufacturers use creative handle designs, but while they look pretty,  they can leave you assuming unnatural wrist positions that will hurt you. Also be sure the edges of it do not cut into your fingers.

A silicone spatula spoon is a very useful tool for the kitchen. Everyone should have one to do the job a regular spatula can not.
